Desktop Computers - All in One or Regular Desktop?

Well it's just about that time again. I'm in the market for a new computer. Now I have a laptop, Ipad Pro and my Iphone but when I have "real" work to do.....I want to do in on my desktop, at my desk with a mouse. I realize I may be becoming one of those old people who hang to "what we used to do." I am not a mobile shopper, I do browse on my phone, but if I make a purchase, I go to the desktop to do it. We recently moved into our new home...yayyyy!!! Now I'm ready to start working on my home office. I currently have a big cherry computer hutch and matching lateral file. Both pieces are really pretty cherry, solid wood....but you know how it is after a while....you just want something new! That applies to my computer too. It's four or five years old and beginning to slow down a bit. Course is loaded to the hilt with programs, image files, video files but its been a workhorse and has served me well. My computer experience dates back to 1984. I had started nursing school. My first computer was a desktop style that I purchased at Radio Shack. It wasn't a Tandy, but it was one that the tech at the shop had put together. I was blown away by the program that had the Encyclopedia on a floppy disk, and it actually had some selective audio! You could hear a bit of Martin Luther King's I Had a Dream Speech. Course, it was priced over my budget, so I took the silent, homemade version that had a screen with amber print. There were no games, no email. It was just a word processor but it got me a long way in creating the nursing care plans that were required. My second computer was actually an IBM that I used for word processing too. This was a huge improvement over my first computer. It wasn't mine, it was loaned to me by the person I worked for. I did medical transcription at home, while I attending nursing school. This was the perfect set up for me. I had a background already in the medical field so I was able to catch on to the transcription of operative reports, history and physicals very quickly. I attending school during the day, and did word processing at night after my daughter, Carrie, and her dad had gone to bed. I burned a lot of midnight oil! The next computer was purchased at Sears.....I mean, really. Then I finally moved up into the real computer world.....I had my first HP! Wish now I could remember what model it was. The RAM was so small compared to today. Years later when I went to graduate school for my masters in nursing (1995), the only internet access we had at the time, was to use one of those 2.5" floppy disk and dial into the University of Mississippi Resource Center. This was long distance of course. We could access articles that were required as part of my graduate degree in nursing. We've come a long way! Through the years I've had a lot of computers. 99% of the time I've stuck with HP. I have had great service from all the desktops and laptops I've had. Don't know if I've just been lucky or not, but seriously, after all this time, I have had one computer that had to be returned to HP for hard drive failure. Now, you have to understand that I'm no computer nerd. I can do a lot of things with a computer and have been known to add extra RAM and I've even changed out a hard drive or two or added an extra drive. Now, I have so many things stored on my computer that when I sense early problems, I just go ahead and upgrade and archive or transfer files. I'm to the point now that I need to consider cloud archival for sure. That's on my to do list. But today I want to research an all in one versus a regular desktop. My reasons for considering an all in one, is that I'd like to do away with the tower. Yes, I know you can get these tiny little computer boxes like on eBay, but I'm not comfortable with that either. I would like to get a new desk, and that search is underway also. The desk I'm looking for will have a least one deep drawer for filing, but I'll have much less storage for sure than I have right now. I have considered painting this computer cabinet, but I really want something smaller and not so massive. I'll blog later about my search for a new desk and chair)) Right now, this is the HP computer that I have my eye on. This is model HP Pavilion All-in-One 27-a240se. It has an Intel processor which is a plus for sure and 16 GB of memory. This is awesome. This is what I need. It does have a touch screen, which isn't important to me but my grandson may like that. I don't know about you, but I read reviews. As with all reviews there will be some problems that just happen given in any number of machines sold. A few reviews said the keyboard was a little small. But honestly, you can get a dandy keyboard replacement for $20 bucks or so, so for me, that is not an issue. It's on sale right now too, that's a plus. And, it ships free.
  • Windows 10 Home 64
  • 7th Generation Intel® Core™ i7 processor
  • 16 GB memory; 1 TB SSHD storage
  • NVIDIA® GeForce® 930MX (2 GB GDDR5 dedicated)
  • 27" diagonal FHD UWVA touch display
  • DVD-Writer
The next computer I'm considering, HP Pavilion All-in-One-24-X015Z, has about the same bells and whistles, but not the Intel processor. Otherwise, they are about the same. The display is a bit smaller, it doesn't have a DVD writer and it priced less.

  • Windows 10 Home 64
  • AMD Dual-Core A-Series processor
  • 12 GB memory; 1 TB HDD storage
  • AMD Radeon™ R5 Graphics
  • 23.8" diagonal Full HD touch display
Since I'm still in the browsing mode, I would appreciate any input you might have on these type of computers. Just leave me a comments with your thoughts, and I would appreciate it! (post contains affiliate links)
